Opinions please?I'm trying to decide between these two receivers for my HT. Using Klipsch RF speaker system.I really want one of these for my HT given their video switching and conversion. I don't really like the Onkyo/ Integra 989ver2.

Also, I considered the B&K 507 receiver or the new Sunfire Ultimate receiver, but neither have video conversion. I also considered separates from B&K, Arcam, Adcom, Rotel, Aragon, and Sunfire. However, each has its advantage/ disadvantage, most are more expensive, and none do video conversion. And yes, I know that I could by an external video switcher and transcoder but to equal the quality and features of these recievers would cost quite a lot (at least $1500 as I've explored multitude options in this respect as well). Therefore one of these two receivers seems my best option but, I'm having trouble with the decision. My thoughts:Denon 5803For:1 - More power 170 x 7 at 8 Ohm.2 - Perhaps better able to drive lower Ohm speakers (wouldn't really be a current issue for me).

Mark,Great post, and very timely for me as I'm in the same process. Here's my 2 cents.First, I'd put the B&K 507 back in the mix. I'm looking at all the same receivers plus some separates right now, and spot the same problems you identified with the Denon, but I'd really put the Denon remote in the 'against' column. I tried it and don't like it, but that's personal.

The Pioneer shut-down problem, well documented here and on other forums, would stop me cold on the Pioneer. NO reason to spend this much $ on a product and worry about whether it will shut down at a key point in the DVD.

And I agree that the Pioneer remote is ungainly. Ergonomically, it is a pain to use, big and klunky. Other than that I agree that the list of pros and cons you put together is spot on - nice work! The B&K is the equal or better of the Denon or Pioneer on all counts that matter, power, sound quality, appearance, construction quality, support, etc. Plus it's American, if that matters to you. The only thing the B&K really lacks is video up-conversion, as it is the equal of the Denon and Pioneer on component video (3 inputs) with unlimited bandwith. The result is you will need to run another cable to the monitor for the VCR and then switch the TV to that input - big deal. I use my VCR once a year at this point.

A macro on the remote will make that process invisible. Everything else (HDTV, prog scan DVD, digital HD recorder, etc.) will run on HD component inputs. And the B&K wins hands down on the remote. The B&K remote is actually the Home Theater Master MX-700, to me the best remote on the market now. In the end, your interface with the receiver is through the remote 99% of the time, so I place a very high priority on the remote. I'm using a HTM MX-500 now (with an older Denon receiver), similar to the MX-700, and it is fabulous.

Easy to use one-handed, simple logic, easy to program, macros are easy, easy for the family to understand and use.To further confuse things (;-), if you can settle for 2 component inputs, take a look at the Rotel RSP-1066 and 1075 separates combo. Also great sound, build quality and support, and you can add the Audio Authority component video switcher to get more component video inputs which will switch automatically. Add in a Rotel tuner and you've spent about the price of the Denon and/or Pioneer. Again, no video upconversion on the Rotel, but that is not very important to me, especially with all the quality problems people report with video upconversion on Denon.

Don't know much about the Pioneer upconversion quality, haven't seen it in action. I did see the Denon and on both composite and S-video the upconverted signal was lousy, not as good as the base signal. My conclusion from that experience was that if I got the Denon I would not use the upconversion feature. If you are making your decision and giving lots of weight to the presence of the upconversion featuer (and haven't seen it in action), you might want to go demo soon to see if you are happy with the upconverted signal. My sense is the resale on the B&K would be much better than the Denon or Pioneer, but that's just a guess on my part from looking at some Ebay ads.Good luck,Hap. Depending on your buying preferences (i.e. Internet versus local), the street price ($2700) on the Pioneer is considerably lower than what I've seen for the Denon. That combined with the fact I REALLY doubt you'll have any shutdown issues with your more-efficient-that-average Klipsch speakers (in fact I've seen posts from Klipsch owners that say their ears bleed before they can get their 49TX to shut down). In terms of real-world power and db in your listenening room, I doubt the Pioneer will shut down, and I doubt the Denon could manage more than a fraction of a db higher output levels.

You have to double the power to gain only 3db. Again, with the Klipsch speakers, either should have plenty of beans. Many think Denon Link is a joke and apparently you agree. The Pioneer open (TI based) solution makes much more sense. It stands to reason Pioneer or someone else, will figure out how to make a compatible multiformat DVD player without the chroma bug, etc. There's already at least one other piece of gear confirmed to work with the 49Txi via firewire and there will be more (Marantz?).

The firmware in the 49TXi is user upgradable as well.Short of being overpriced and their blowing the Denon Link thing, I have nothing against Denon. But I think the Pioneer is a much better value and offers some real-world benefits over the Denon. As you point out, they both have their pluses and minuses.

Resale is a hard one to call. Frankly, they could both suck if they don't support HD-DVD for example. That leads to my final caveat. There was lots of DVI momentum at CES last month and I suspect you're going to see DVI switching on the next generation of flagship receivers. So if HD content/quality is important to you (or will be) you might want to think about waiting or the consequences of having to work around switching multiple DVI devices some other way. Mark,Even though I own a 5803 and am very happy with it I would advise against it for the time being.

Denon really messed up with their propriatary Denon link. Currently the only player that supports it is the 9000 and it can't do SACD.

Yes, Denon will have other players in the future that will support the Denon link but fact of the matter is that you're always stuck to buy a Denon player. Pioneer with it's firewire connection will allow for more flexibility. Regarding price I don't think there's that much of a difference anymore.

I paid $3k from an authorized dealer which is still $300 more than the street price of the Pioneer but they aren't worlds apart anymore. You list the remote as a plus on the Denon. I have to disagree on that one. I personally don't like the Aktis remote. Just get a Pronto and be done with it. While the Aktis remote does have RF capability there have been multiple reports on this and other forums of the 5803 going into ht nirvana when used with RF.

Manual

The receiver will not power on and nothing short of pulling the plug will awaken it again. I'm not sure if Denon ever fixed this issue.Regarding the whole DVI issue. Well, that is something you and only you can determine what to do. Yes, more than likely DVI switching will be part of the next generation of flagship receivers. On the other hand there will always be something new just around the corner with the next generation models.

If you continually think about what the next generation may have you end up not buying anything because you're always waiting for the next big thing. Fact of the matter is that technology evolves so quickly these days that your brand new flagship receiver will be outdated relatively quickly. I think you'd lie to yourself if you think you could buy any HT gear these days and expect it's technology to last the next 10 years.

So just buy what you like today and enjoy it. And in a couple years when your gear is starting to be totally outdated buy something new.-MarcW. Hi Mark,I was torn between these two receivers. My best advice to you is to go and listen to them. FWIW, I had the EXACT same considerations as you, along with the 'current' as opposed to future pricing (as the Pioneer could be had for a few bucks less, and the Pio DVD-A/SACD unit is significantly less expensive than the Denon DVD-A only). After listening, I actually preferred the Denon (no flaming please, it's just my opinion).

The MCACC was nice with the Pio though, especially as I do not have 'matched' speakers all around. Having been through all that, and debating back and forth for a year, I ended up hearing the Anthem AVM-20 and pretty much bought it then and there. Now I'm not advocating more choices for you, I'm just suggesting that you should base a large portion of your decision on how you feel the unit sounds to YOU, because despite all their similarities and features, they do sound different.PS - my choice of the Denon over the Pioneer may have been biased by what sound my ears were used to as I was upgrading from an earlier Denon receiver.

(although I still own an older Pioneer Elite for my upstairs viewing)EDIT - MarcW is right too, skip either of these remotes and get a Pronto. Actually the Pioneer is capable of passing 720p no problem I think you got your numbers a little of it's 37MHz for 720p not 1080i. If the 49TXi couldn't pass 720p then it wouldn't be THX ULTRA2 certified because it is part of their requirements that it be able to do this flawlessly with no degradation. No one has ever noticed any degradation in comparasions between directly to the TV or routed through the 49TXi.Also when I watched Pearl Harbor on DVD I specifically remember when I tried Dolby Headphones that it said you didn't need a special decoder and that the regular DD would work.

DH isn't important to me at least because I think there is only 2 movies that support it and I don't like either of them. Also another downside is that it takes up more DVD space which could be used for better PQ instead on some worthless stereo track.I had a 37TX that I sold for $90 less than what I paid for it, and this was when the 49 and 47TX had been out for 5 months. I don't think that much of the 49tx remote it's OK. I definitely think the 49TXi is much better looking than the Denon. Also when S&V tested the Denon for power it didn't live up to it's number actually the 49TX did better than the 5803; the 49TX did 144 watts with all channels driven (1 kHz into 8 ohms)(or maybe it was 6 channels) and the Denon did 118 watts all channels driven (1 kHz into 8 ohms).I also have the Klipsch RF setup and have never experienced shutdown issues I prolly never use more than 10-15 watts total for all 7 speakers. I've watched all Gladiator, parts of Episode i and II and parts of The Matrix at reference level and never had a problem. You should never have a shutdown problem with your RF speakers if you give it ventilation but if you wrap your receiver in a thick blanket than you might get it to shutdown.Daniel Smith.

Regarding Video BandwidthCheck out this information regarding video bandwidth and required circuit bandwidth:According to the example calculation, for a 4.2 MHz NTSC signal the circuit to have a BW(-3B) nominal for 0.5dB flatness (MHz) should be 18MHz and to have a BW(-3B) nominal for 0.1dB flatness (Mhz) should have a bandwidth of 41MHz.The numbers I was given btw 720p and 1080i don't quite add up according to this chart. Based on this chart each signal bandwidth is 26MHz, but the circuit should have a bandwidth of 111MHz (for a BW(-3B) nominal for 0.5dB flatness (MHz) and for BW(-3B) nominal for 0.1dB flatness (MHz) should have a bandwidth of 255MHz!!!Mark. Right and wrongReceivers don't do signal processing, they do pass through.

The 255MHz is the minimum required to sample a signal for processing/display. That's why you see 300MHz switchers/processors. (I can't seem remember exactly from my sig processing class.) But I could be wrong on that. They just pass through the signal. So the signal bandwidth is actually 112MHz for 1080i @ 60 fps (these are interlaced fields per second, not complete frames)BTW: Please forgive my ealier answer. I was exluding things like non-active pixels, Kell factor on retraces, syncs, etc etc that increase the bandwidth. I was over simplifying the situation for the non-techies.:-). I just had Mr.

Gannon do a calibration of my HDTV and am using an elite 47TX. We ran his signal generator through the pass thrus on the receiver and then straight to the TV to see if there was any noticeable degeneration. The change in quality was so minor that it was virtually indistinguishable.

It may even have been the cheap video cables from the receiver to the TV causing it. In any event, though I'm far from an expert, I wouldn't let the specs persuade anyone from not buying the Pioneer.Norm.

I have the following equipment: a 5803, a Sony HD-200 Sat receiver, antenna in my attic and a JVC 150cl DILA projector. My HDTV video signal is connected in the following ways:hdtv signal via antenna - sat box - 5803 - component input to projectorhdtv signal via DirecTV sat signal - sat box - 5803 - component input to projectorThe JVC produces a stunning HDTV picture both ways. The projector also has a menu that you can call up that tells you what kind of signal it is receiving (NTSC, 480p, HDTV) and when I am using the above connection is says 'HDTV'.Therefore I conclude that the 5803 is indeed passing a HDTV signal through its connectors. I seem to remember that one day I was surprised to see '720p' pop up on my projectors display. I think it was a sports event.

This would imply that the 5803 can pass through that data too.Can anyone confirm that this works with the Pioneer unit?
