Jens, Not my area of specialization: But the P14 was a British rifle made in America for Britain during WW I to supplement the regular British Lee-Enfield rifles which were not being produced fast enough. It appears to be from Eddystone Arsenal and is labeled an “Emergency Reserve Arm” (ERA). After the war they went into stores and were later reissued for WW II. The example posted looks like it is marked “Drill Purpose” (DP) which means it was no longer considered to be an arm for issue, but at some point was consigned to be used for training purposes.

I hope that this answers some of your questions. Unfortunately I don’t have the serial number ranges handy - but perhaps someone else can help there. Froggy; The ERA is a reference to the manufacturer ( Eddystone ) whom was a subsidiary of Remington.

It has nothing to do with 'emergency whatever'.After WW1 the Patt'14 was kept in limited numers and many kept long enough were simply marked 'EY' to designate sunsitiute standard for emergency use. A look into the details also tells that the winchester product had far more problems with interchangeability than either the Rem or Eddy made examples.

But some apparently liked the brand name better. I have shot and owned many Patt'14's and found little difference in accuracy in any that were in as made trim.My five digit serial ERA Patt'14, which is matching with all the bells and whistles and not FTR'd, is capable of astonishingly tight groups at all ranges I have shot it at.

I can't honestly say I have handled a more consistantly accurate issue rifle of the 1914-1945 time frame. Gew 98, I stand corrected and now that I think about it ERA represented Eddystone Remington Arms with Eddystone being a subsidiary and the other refers to a classification.Winchester might have had its problems, however if memory serves me correctly it was the Eddystone rifles that had problems with receivers cracking when they were rebarreled. For a rifle with iron sights they do have a reputation for accuracy. But with a Garand I could toss a second or third round down range a lot faster with a reasonable chance of hitting whatever I was shooting at - which worked well for me.
